  • Abraham Lincoln was a political leader of the Union. He was the 16th President of the United States during the Civil War. Lincoln was a Republican who was strongly against slavery expansion.
  • Advantage 1
  • We have bigger population!
  • The Union troops had Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman as their military leaders. Ulysses S. Grant led the Union in the Battle of Shiloh, where the Union claimed their first victory in the war.
  • Advantage 2
  • Our industry is mighty!!!
  • Winfield Scott came up with the "Anaconda Plan". It involved surrounding, and "suffocating" the South. The Union also planned to blockade the South, and capture its Capital Richmond, Virginia.
  • Advantage 3
  • Our railroads represent advanced transportation!
  • The Union had a larger population than the Confederate States, having 22 million citizens. It helped the Union create, and raise an army. Citizens of the Union were also able to support war efforts.
  • Factories helped the Union troops by resupplying, and producing weapons, boots, and clothing. Factories were huge, and made up the majority of the Union's industry. They were able to produce necessary items needed for war.
  • Most Northern citizens used railroads for transportation since the Industrial Revolution. In fact, the majority of Union citizens travelling on railroads was 72%. Railroads made travelling faster for the Union, which was a great advantage against the Confederacy.
