Montressor approaches Fortunato and is discussing with him his dilemma about the wine. Montressor mentions that he needs a wine expert like him to help him decide whether he wasted his money on that wine.
They both decide to go to the catacombs, but throughout their walk Montressor reminds Fortunato that his health is more important rather than to help him, that way he does not feel as guilty to guide him to death.
Still on the way to the catacombs, Montressor is convinced of his plan after Fortunato insults him again about his social status.
Montressor begins to chain him, while Fortunato is having trouble breathing and realizes what is going on.
After being conscious of his dilemma, Fortunato begins to shout in hope that Montressor will allow him his freedom or someone can rescue him.
Montressor achieves his goal and leaves Fortunato locked up and at this point dead. After this no one in that town spoke regarding Fortunato's disappearance, which is exactly what Montressor wanted.
