He goes to the lagoon where he drops and breaks the record he had purchased for Phoebe. Once he is more sober he sneaks into Phoebe's room and shows her the broken pieces of the record. He has a conversation with her about life.
Before Holden even says anything Phoebe guesses that he has been kicked out of school. Then Holden explains that he would like to be a "catcher in the rye", essentially he wants to save children from losing there innocence. Holden still wants to leave and Phoebe gives him her Christmas money.
When he hears his parents come home, he leaves to avoid them. Holden decides to go to Mr. Antolini's home. Mr. Antolini is Holden's favorite teacher at Elkton Hills. They have a conversation.
Mr. Antolini is trying to stop Holden from "falling" like "the catcher in the rye" saves the kids from falling off the cliff. Holden falls asleep on his couch and wakes up when Mr. Antolini pets him. He is startled and leaves at 5:00am.
He spends the rest of the night sleeping at the Grand Central Station on a bench. He wakes up and starts walking down 5th avenue. Later he writes a note to Phoebe with paper and a pen he bought at a stationary store. He drops off the note at Phoebe's school office.
The note said to meet him at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When he leaves the school he see graffiti on the wall and tries to get it off but cannot. At the museum he meet two boys and they visit the mummy exhibition.
