  • 1599, The East India Company was founded in England. At this time, India was not a united country. There were multiple small states, each with its own ruler
  • At the same time, The French had their own East India Company. They competed with the British and even had a full-scale war (1700)
  • The British agreed that they would help any ruler who would help them trade
  • 1757, Robert Clive persuaded an Indian general to fight him and overthrow Siraj-ud-Daula- Robert Clive won and took Bengal... This gave the British control over Bengal
  • Robert Clive was considered a hero- in 1765, he was sent back to India to rule over Bengal. From then, he took more Indian states. The French were soon defeated and pushed out of India
  • By the 1850's, the British ruled 60% of India. They banned traditional Indian ceremonies, and even wanted India to use the British education system. Many Indians disliked and resented the British rule
