The Dentist: In this chapter, the speaker talks about Curt Lemon. He goes on about the things that Curt Lemon did that made him an outsider. In February they were working on a project called Rocket Pocket. He explains how Curt Lemon is afraid of the dentist. Curt wakes up with a bad toothache and the dentist has to remove a tooth. After the procedure is done… Curt was fine.

He goes on and on about her when he should be thinking about something else. She's a distraction. This chapter explains the characters in detail, and informs us of the Things they carry. Everything each soldier carries has some sort of significance to it as well.
In Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong, Rat Kiley tells the readers a story of his first assignments in Chu Lai. Kiley ran an aid station with other men as well, near a river called the Song Tra Bong. Later on Eddie Diamond thought about what it would be like to bring a girl to camp. One soldier likes the idea so he writes a letter. His childhood sweetheart, Mary Anne arrives. Over time Mary Anne basically becomes one of the guys. She learns a few things and cuts her hair short. Fossie thinks she should go home but she would not. Fossie and Mary Anne get engaged but not for long. Fossie makes an arrangement for her to go home, Mary Anne is not pleased. She comes back 3 weeks later. Kiley explains he never knew what happened to Mary Anne.
