Long ago, there was a young Jewishgirl named Hadassah. She was an orphan but she was adopted by her uncle, Mordecai. Mordecai treated Hadassah as if she were his own daughter. He even gave her a Persian name. Her new name was Esther.
Esther grew up to be a kind and beautiful woman.
One day the king of Persia had a party. He ordered the queen to come but she didn't so the king got mad and kicked her out of the palace.
The king needed a new queen, so he held a contest where the most beautiful woman would become queen.
I need a new queen!
Mordecai, Esther's uncle, was the gatekeeper of the palace so he heard about the contest and told Esther that she should participate in it because she was so beautiful he was sure that the king would make her queen. Esther said she would participate in the contest.
She was also supposed to act as if she did not know Mordecai and she was not supposed to tell anyone that she was a Jew because if the king knew, then he would not take Esther as the new queen.
