Frederick Douglass was born into the cruelty of slavery, he was born sometime in the 1800s and lived in a plantation in Maryland. He was sad and alone, as all families were separated, and his mother had to walk all night to see him. He didn’t know how old he was and had no real relationship with his family. Hoping to see them more often, as he moved from home to home. They were also forced to work all the time, from morning to night, again and again, in any and all weather conditions. Also, their slave owners treated them horribly as they were overworked and beaten to death.
One day all the slaves were out on the field fanning wheat, the sun was sparkling like water, and the slaves were burning like fire. His slave master, Covey wasn’t there. Douglass felt really sick and extremely dizzy, therefore poor Douglass fainted. As he was crawling into the shade the fanning machine stopped working and Covey heard so he rushed to the field. When he arrived he asked where Douglass was and another slave told him.
As Covey approached, he urged Douglass to get up, but Douglass was to weak to move.“Get up you reckless animal”, Covey said. Douglass tried as hard as he could, and when he managed to get up, he fell back down. Covey started to fiercely beat Douglass, but Douglass was not strong enough to fight back. He couldn’t do anything but lay on the ground and suffer the harsh beatings of Covey, and as he laid there he was thinking about how cold blooded slavery is.
