The Carbon starts in the atmosphere
Then the Carbon goes from the atmosphere to the local plant life where it is used for Photosynthesis and it helps make food for the plants. Animals then eat those plants and that carbon goes into their bodies and through breathing CO2 is released into the atmosphere.
The Carbon travels through the bodies of plants and animals. It moves into the ground via animal feces or when the plant or animal dies. If the dead are buried underground, they will become fossil fuels after millions of years.
