Jonas learns about release to elsewhere and that his dad will be releasing a twin. The Giver wants him to understand what that means and show Jonas a video of the child being killed, wrapped up and thrown away like garbage.
Jonas is so upset after finding out that his dads job is really to kill infants and Fiona's job is to kill the elderly even though they don't understnd that's what they're doing. He decided to run aways to Elsewhere which will release his memories to the community.
Jonas learns that Gabriel is to be released and decides to escape ahead of time and take him with him. He steals supplies and knows they will send planes to look for him and Gabriel soon. He notices his memories are not as strong in Elsewhere when he tries to give good memories of snow to Gabriel
Jonas and Gabriel are both starving and hes realizing that rain, hills and other elements are making it hard to survive. He's wondering if he made the right choice but he knows that is he had stayed he would have been starving for love, color and feelings so really there was no choice at all
The snow is getting deeper and things are getting worse but Jonas knows he has to go on or they will die. He thinks about the Giver, Fiona and Asher and finds the strength to continue. He climbs the mountain and finds a sled at the peak.
Jonas and Gabriel reach the bottom of the hill and find a community filled with joy, warmth, laughter and singing. Jonas thought he heard music coming from the community he left but thinks to himself maybe its just an echo.
