Hoot by Carl Hiaasen is about a boy named Roy, who gets bullied by a teenager named Dana Matherson. Roy and his friends discover burrowing owls, where people want to build the pancake resturant, and Roy tries to save them. People do not believe Roy and do not want to postpone the building date.
Roy and his friends, Beatrice and Mullett Fingers, found some burrowing owls and they are right where a pancake house is going to be built. Roy, Beatrice, and Mullett Fingers are trying to stop the owners. The owners do not want to postpone the opening date and will not believe them.
Roy gets moved to a new school and has to make new friends. On Roy's bus, there is a kid named Dana Matherson, who does not really like Roy. Dana is always making fun and hurting Roy. One day when Roy was looking out the window, he saw a boy who was running without shoes.
Roy and his friends discovered burrowing owls where a pancake house was being built. They also discovered that the people who own the pancake house did not know the owls were there and did not get a permit. Since the owners do not have a permit, it is illegal to build there and Roy and his friends try to tell them that.
Dana Matherson got arrested for sneaking into a trailer. The reason Dana broke into the trailer was because he thought there was a stash of cigarettes in there. Dana got told by Roy that there were cigarettes in that trailer so he decided to go look.
Since Roy and his friends stood up for the owls and showed proof to Chuck Muckle...Roy, Beatrice, and Mullett Fingers all kept the owls alive. Roy had Mullett Fingers take pictures of the owls, which did not really go as planned because you could not see the owls clearly. Roy eventually took Chuck and the owners of the pancake house to see the owls and they believed him.
