General Grant broke through the Confederate defenses so Lee decides to retreat on April 2. At the same time Sherman is closing in on the last confederate defenders.
Lee recognizes there is no hope left
In the second week of April 1865, Grant had surrounded Lee's army and he demanded them to surrender. Lee refused and he tried to break through their defenses.
Lee tried a few last minute attacks but they are still surrounded. Lee tried to join the other Confederate Army fighting in North Carolina but Grant cut off his escape just west of Richmond.
The Civil War is over
Stop celebrating! The war is over.... The rebels are our countrymen again.
Knowing the situation was hopeless, Lee decides to see General Grant.
We can't keep fighting. And more of my men are dying.. There is nothing left for me to do but go and see General Grant.
On April 19, 1865, Lee and Grant both met at a home in the small town of Appomattox Courthouse where Lee surrenders, thus ending the Civil war.
The Union won the war. Grant allowed the Confederates to keep their horses. The Confederates will not be tried for treason. When Grant returned he stopped his soldiers from cheering their victory. The war was over.
