  • Today we will be learning about the Theory of Evolution. Now a theory is a well supported testable explanation of phenomena that have occurred in the natural world.  Evolution explains the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms. A very useful piece of evidence supporting the theory of evolution is the preserved remains of ancient organisms or fossils. Now what do you guys remember about the homework?
  • Differences among individuals of a species is called natural variation and it doesn't mean the individual is a different species
  • Darwin coined the term 'struggle for existence' and used it to refer to when organisms compete for resources.
  • Artificial selection occurs when only those organisms with favorable traits are allowed to reproduce. Humans have used artificial selection on animals like sheep.
  • The ability of an individual to survive and reproduce in it's specific environment is called fitness. Animals with higher fitness are more likely to survive.
  • An adaptation is any inherited characteristic that increases an organism's chance of survival.
  • Impressive you guys really studied! Another important thing is the survival of the fittest. The survival of the fittest dictates that individuals who are better suited for their environment survive and reproduce the most successfully. Natural selection is the same as the survival of the fittest. The idea that each living species as descended with changes from other species over time is called descent with modifications.
  • The principle that we could find the common ancestors of all living things is called common descent. Homologous structures have different mature forms, but develop from the same embryonic tissues.
  • And organs that are so small they don't serve a function are called vestigial organs and they are traces of homologous organs in other species.
  • Great Job Today!
