  • Christopher Columbus convinced the king and queen of Spain into paying for his expedition by making them promises.
  • Christopher was given 3 ships, the Santa Maria, the Nina, and Pinta were the smaller ships. The ships were filled with a fleet of 90 men and Christopher set sail on August 1492 hoping to reach Asia by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • On October 12, 1492 land was spotted. Christopher and his crew waded ashore on the Bahama Islands when people known as the Arawak Indians came out their villages to greet Columbus and his crew.
  • Columbus wrote about his encounter with the Indians in his ships log. The log was later given to the king and queen of Spain.
  • I took some Indians by force. They are very intelligent ,they are well built with good bodies and handsome features. They would make fine servants and they would easily be made Christians. We could over power them and make them do whatever we wish.
  • One of Columbus' promises was gold. he was desperate and wanted to show profit on his voyages. Columbus and the Spaniards ordered Indians over 13 to collect gold. The Spaniards harshly punished Indians who attempted to escape.
  • Finding gold wasn't such an easy task. To avoid having to collect gold for the Spaniards, the indians either ran away or commit suicide by poisoning themselves. The Spaniards murdered the Indians who ran away. 2 years of suicides and murders, half a million of Indians were dead. A century later from 1550, no Indians were left on the island.
