- Siddhartha Gautama was born into luxury as a prince in a palace. He grew up surrounded by beauty, with everything he wanted, only seeing youth and riches.
- One day, he decided that he wanted to see what was outside the palace gates, it was arranged for him to see the town, but only the young citizens. The elderly were hidden away.But Siddhartha saw an elderly couple, and asked who they were, and why they looked that way. His charioteer told him that they were old, and Siddhartha was shocked by this concept of 'old'.
- Siddhartha, though horrified by what he had discovered, wished to visit the town again. This time he saw sick men, ailing by the roadside. He again asked his charioteer, 'What is wrong with these men?' and when he found out they were ill, he was horrified by what happened to people outside the palace.
- Siddhartha decided to leave the palace again. This time he saw death for the first time. A man's lifeless body being burned by his friends. 'What is happening? Why are they burning him?' he asked. 'He has passed on' the charioteer said.
- The last time Siddhartha left the palace, he came across a holy man sitting in the streets, poor but perfectly happy. This idea was new to him, as he had always seen riches as happiness, and didn't understand how you could be happy without money. This opened a whole new point of view for Siddhartha.
- After seeing his Four Sights, Siddhartha left the palace for good and learnt the ways of the holy men, eventually becoming known at the Buddha!
