  • It's role as a center of trade that connected Europe and Asia made it a target for many different groups that were trying to gain power in the region.
  •  Constantinople helped keep the city in Byzantine hands, but much of the land conquered by Justinian had been retaken by other by 1453. At this point the Byzantines were surrounded by the Ottoman Empire and Seljuk Turks.
  • Attacks on the Byzantine Empire were common. The There were also several civil wars that weakened the Empire.
  • Attacks on the Byzantine Empire were common, to its existence. The Huns tried to break through the walls of the Constantinople and Crusades were successful for a short time. The end of the Empire finally came when the Ottoman Empire attacked the city.
  • The defenses of the city were so strong that it still took 53 days of continuous fighting. the Byzantines while fighting created the cannon. On the other hand the Ottomans had a new weapon called a Great Bombard that could fire cannonballs the size of a small car at the walls.
  •  When the city finally fell, the people fleeing the city for Europe brought many of the ideas and technologies the Romans had developed with them. The cities they settled in became some of the cities that would begin the Renaissance in Europe.
