Marhaban (that's hi in Arabic), my name is Aalia and this is my family. When I was ten, we decided to move to Canada. I've been living here for about six years now. There are so many wonderful things that Canada has to offer. However, Islamophobia is a big issue that we have to deal with on a daily basis. Luckily in Canada, we have many laws that help protect everyones basic rights and freedoms..
In Canada, we have the right to freedom of speech. This means that we have the right to voice our opinion. However, section 319 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms(a long list of rules everyone has to follow) says that we are not allowed to promote hate, this involves making offensive remarks towards people.
Go back to your country you terrorist!
Hi, welcome to Tony's Pizzaria. If you want to be served here, you're going to have to remove that headscarf.
In Canada, I have the right to be free from discrimination. The Human Rights Act states that the only time I can be refused service is if I break one of the rules that were enforced by the owner. However, this can not include religious monuments, because it would be discrimatory. Therefore, I can not be denied service due to my headscarf or any other religious attributes I wear or carry.
In Canada, we have the right of association. This means that we are free to join any groups, people, or organizations we want to without being persecuted. By being told we can't be associated with a certain group of people is not right nor is it legal.
I'm sorry Aalia but, I was told that I couldn't be seen with you anymore.
Hey Aalia, how was your day?
I don't want to talk about it. I'll be upstairs if you need me.
Aalia, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Sometimes people aren't educated enough to know what they are doing is wrong. You are always going to have to deal with this but you have to remember how amazing you are and just because you may be different doesn't mean you are any less human than anyone else. I can't express how important it is to continue to learn about your rights as a Canadian citizen.
