This story takes place in southern area of the united states on a small country side, where the narrator and his new born baby brother live.
The narrators baby brother is born with a few disabilities and health problems. But the Narrator is having a hard time accepting the fact that his new brother can't do everything he wanted him to.
Brother, don't leave me!
The narrator's pride convinced him that he should teach Doodle how to be a "normal kid." When Doodle is finally walking the narrator thinks that he can teach Doodle other things! In the summer the family finds a dead scarlet ibis, the family doesn't think anything of it but Doodle creates a connection with it.
The last time the narrator is teaching doodle life skills, doodle shows him that he is too weak to complete the last day of it. The narrator gets mad at doodle so they decide to go home. While going home a thunderstorm begins to come in. The narrator decides that he should run home. But Doodle is too weak to keep up wit him so doodle yells. "Brother don't leave me."
The narrator turns around to go and get Doodle, but he finds doodle dead under a bush, near where they found the scarlet ibis.
The narrator is remembering how his selfish pride killed his brother Doodle.
