  • Then their were 5 patriarchs in equal authority. Then over time the bishop of Rome claimed authority over all Christians everywhere. He took the title of pope.

  • As Christianity grew bigger the emperor Constantine decided that the church needed one clear set of religions. Then bishops met in Nicaea and made a creed.
  • We shall have two religions!
  • Okay!
  • Early Christians argued over the use of icons and which icons were better or which ones you should honor.
  • In the 700s, several Byzantine emperors tried to stop icon worship but it didn't work.
  • After Eastern Orthodox church and Western Rome Catholic church kept fighting over which religion was better it lead to the development of two religious traditions.
