  • We want to choose the bishops for our countries
  • During the middle ages, the two most powerful groups in Europe often fought over who would have the most power, one of their arguments was overwhich group would be able to pick the Bishops.
  • No the popes will choose the bishops for our countries
  • In 1073 a new pope named Pope Gregory VII grew powerful. One of the current kings named King Henry IV chose a bishop for his country. Gregory disapproved of this bishop, starting a feud between the two.
  • I, King Henry IV, chose a great Bishop for my country
  • No! I, Pope Gregory VII, disprove of your decision!
  • Angry at Pope Gregory's disapproval, King Henry Convinces the German Bishops to remove Gregory as Pope. As a response Gregory excommunicated Henry from the church, which back then they thought meant that they will not be able to go into heaven. Gregory then tried to get the empires nobles to overthrow King Henry
  • How dare you question me! Bishops we should remove him as pope
  • Yeah!
  • No I will excommunicate you from the Catholic church
  • Please allow me back into the church.
  • Ok, now the people know who has the most power. Now us popes have the upper hand
  • King Henry, afraid of what might happen to him, went to Italy to beg Pope Gregory for forgiveness. Henry waited three days bear foot in the snow outside of Gregory's home until Gregory finally forgave him. Although King Henry was back in power, the people now knew who was the most powerful of the two.
  • R.I.P King Henry IV
  • Even after Pope Gregory and King Henry died, the battle over the right to choose bishops continued. 
  • R.I.P Pope Gregory VII
  • In 1122, a new pope and emperor gain power and make a compromise where popes choose bishops and abbots, but the bishops and abbots obey the king. Although they created this compromise, the power struggle between the two groups continue.
