Abigail is known in the Crucible for lying just to cover herself. Abigail is questioned about what happened in the woods. Parris says that when he came upon the girls, he saw that they had a kettle with a frog in it, while doing black magic, Abigail admits that Tituba called the Devil.

Abigail is fearing of having her name ruined in the town. Abigail denies to Parris everything that happened in the forest. This all causes her to pretend to know who in the town are witches, so she proceeds with false accusations.
Reverend Parris walked up on his daughter Betty, niece Abigail, and more of the girls dancing in the woods and playing with black magic. His first thought when seeing this was that no one of the town can find out becuase his name/reputation would be ruined for good.
