- I'm sorry to inform you but your baby was born with Harlequin type Ichthyosis
- What does that mean, I never heard of it?
- Its a skin condition, people who have it are born with very hard and thick skin covering their body. Skin forms large plates that are separated by deep cracks.The conditions affects the look of eyelids, nose, mouth, and ears, as well as limits movement
- The condition can restrict the baby's breathing and lead to respiratory arrest. Harlequin Ichthyosis makes it difficult for the body to control water loss, regulate body temperature, and fight infections.
- Will my baby be okay?
- Infants would usually not survive the newborn period, but with lots of medical support and improvement treatment, babies have a better chance of living into childhood and early adulthood. The medications called Etretinate has beed established effective.
- Can anything be done?
- How could this happen? I dont have this condition, I've never shown any symptoms!
- The parents each carry one copy of the altered gene, but they typically do not show signs and symptoms of the condition.
