  • The narrator speaks stating that he is not crazy, but nervous.
  • "True!--nervous--very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?
  • The old man's vulture eye
  • The narrator spies on the old man for seven nights at midnight.
  • The eighth night the old man wakes up and the narrator murderous him.
  • (chuckled)
  • "Who's there?" cried out the old man
  • The narrator disassembles the old man's body and hides it under the floorboards. The cops come and question him, and the narrator starts to hear "the old man's" heartbeat get louder and louder.
  • The narrator confesses to murdering the old man.
  • "Villains" the narrator shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here!--It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
