You didn't give him enough time to choose his card!
It is the end of June, all the people in the town join together for The Lottery. Mr. Summers announces the rules, he calls each family one-by-one to go up to the black box and draw.
The Hutchinson family gets called to go draw for their card. Bill Hutchinson draws his card and Tessie realizes that her husband is the one who drew the card with a black dot on it. Tessie begins to shout that Mr. Summers didn't give Bill enough time to choose his card.
This isn't fair! This isn't right!
Mr. Summer's calls the whole Hutchinson family up and places in 5 cards into the box, including the card with the black dot. He tells everyone in the family to draw a card.
Everyone in the Hutchinson family goes to draw for a card. Everyone has a blank card except for Tessie. She then realizes that she is the "winner" of the lottery.
Once Tessie realizes she is going to die, she begins to scream about how this isn't right. The go to gather the stones from the pile the made earlier. The adults follow suit and pick up bigger and heavier stones. The villagers chase after Tessie and begin the stoning.
The villagers follow Old Man Warner's commands and begin to stone Tessie. The author emphasizes a big rock hitting Tessie on the side of the head. Tessie continues the tradition of the lottery by being "sacrificed" to help the growing of the next crops.
