  • Hester is out of prison to fulfill her punishment for her crime of adultery and refusing to reveal the father's name, to stand on the scaffold for 3 hours displaying her scarlet letter. As she stands on the scaffold she looks out to the crows and she her husband who she thought was dead
  • Hesters husband comes to visit her in jail. He gives her "medicine" to calm her. Then tells her that he has changed his name to Roger Chillingworth to protect his identity. Hester still refuses to tell her husband who the father is. Roger tells Hester that he will have his revenge someday.
  •  1 and 1/2 years later Heater is released from prison. Hester and Pearl go to live in a cottage near the shore were Hester takes up sewing for a living. Hester is a very skilled seamstress but is still shunned by the community.

  • Pearl is known 3 years old and is known as the demon child and called a "product of sin". Townspeople believe pearl should be taken away from Heter. Hester goes to Bellingham to plead her side of the story. After Bellingham ask`s Dimmesdale to spake on Hester's defense, Dimmesdale says God sent Pearl as a blessing, not a curse. Bellingham allows Hester to keep Pearl.
  • Chillingworth has kept his identity a secret since arriving in town. He takes on the role of being a Doctor in the community. Dimmesdale begins to have heart problems. To help treat Dimmesdale, Chillingworth has him move in. Chillingworth has suspicion Dimmesdale is Pearls father and begins to play mind games with Dimmesdale
  • Dimmesdale`s guilt of his sin he committed begins destroying him on the inside. Dimmesdale begins to have visions because of his guilt. One of his visions is of himself, Hester and Peral standing on the scaffold as a Scarlet A streaks through the sky.
