Carbon enters the soil through decomposition of plants and animals.
when plants and animals die, there bodies, wood and leaves, decay bringing carbon into the ground. some will become fossil fuels millions of years later.
animals and plants need to get rid of carbon dioxide through respiration. carbon moves from fossil fuels to the atmosphere when fuels are burned
plants use carbon dioxide and sunlight to make their own food. carbon becomes part of the plant. the plants that die are buried can turn into fossil fuels like coal.
When humans burn fossil fuels to power factories, cars, etc. , most of the carbon enter the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
