  • Conflict/Climax
  • Sergeant comes to the family’s home. He gives them the Monkey’s Paw. He walks them through it’s history and then leaves. The family jokes around and then they make their first wish, 200 pounds.
  • Falling Action
  • The son Herbert, dies at work. He gets stuck in a piece of machinery and cant escape. The company sends a worker to inform the family. They receive 200 pounds from the company in consideration of Herbert’s death.
  • Resolution
  • The mom stands at the window crying, then realizes they can wish Herbert back to life. The dad refuses but she then says that he caused Herbert’s death and he gives in. He goes downstairs and wishes for him to come back to life. Later, when they were asleep, they heard knock on the door, and it was Herbert.
  • Superstition
  • The parents go downstairs to investigate the knocking. The mom tries to open the door but cant, sending them into chaos. The dad then hurries over to the paw and wishes Herbert be gone. The mom finally gets the door open just for Herbert to be gone.
  • The mom wheeps on the front lawn as the father comforts her. Over the next year, the paw’s consequences took both the mom and dad to the grave. The mother died from grief over the whole event. The father died while visiting his wife and Herbert’s graves.
  • A superstition widely known in sports is The Madden Curse. The football player placed of the cover of the NFL Madden football video game have had unusual bad seasons the following year. This past year, it had appeared that Tom Brady had broken the curse, but he then dropped a pass that would've won him team the Super Bowl.
