Before leaving to the battle of Bladensburg to meet his generals on the battlefield President Madison asked his wife Dolley Madison to wait for him to come home.
After the Americans lost to the British in the battle of Bladensburg Washington DC was left exposed to attack because most congressmen and officials fled the nations capital so the British took advantage.

The British had said that if they captured Dolley Madison they would parade her through the streets of london as a prisoner of war

Dolley Madison got all of her important belongings including the portrait of George Washington and then rode off on her carriage with her servants, one of them was named Paul Jennings. Meanwhile a huge storm was building up with a tornado.
Dolley had a dinner ready because she was expecting the arrival of her husband James Madison but since she had fled the house the British found the dinner on the table and decided to eat before they set the house to flames.

Dolley and James Madison met up and then went to Virginia and stayed at the octagon house while Washington was being reconstructed.
