Storyboard Text

  • Members of the second Estate enjoyed many luxuries, such as large houses and bedrooms, lots of well made furniture, and owning pets such as a dog.
  • Normally I sleep in as much as needed. The maids and servants wake up at 5 in the morning, but they are instructed not to disturb my sleep. I have an earlier meeting today, and am only therefore awake at this time.
  • Another benefit of being in the second estate was the access to comfortable and efficient travel. The second estate also owned the right to carry a sword and hold titles, unlike the other two estates.
  • We are going to Touraumbe Palace. It is only a short distance away, so today I decided to travel in one of my many open carriages.
  • My townspeople aren't paying sufficient amounts
  • The second Estate had a large influence on the government. They therefore received better treatment in court, could alter how much they were to pay the government, and had some control over how much the people of their town paid. Additionally, they could always enjoy meals including expensive wine and large amounts of meat.
  • I will ask the King to do something about the tax collector sent to my district
  • The estate system was extremely important throughout the middle age society. It created one of the greatest inequalities in wealth, leaving few filthy rich and almost everyone extremely poor. The second estate consisted of kings, queens, nobles, dukes, viscounts, and military leaders. They made up a small population of 120,000-350,000 people. One of the greatest benefits of the second estate was the financial benefit of not having to pay certain taxes. Even though large landowners, the second estate were exempt from paying the Taille, a tax on land or income. They did not pay the Corvee, and very often were able to evade the Capitation and Twentieths. All of these taxes were orignially meant to be payed by every French citizen.
  • The clothing worn by the second estate was very different to that of the others. They wore wigs, detailed accessories, and hats. Men wore breeches and silk socks. Women wore elaborate skirts and large corsets.
