  • who is Frederick Douglass?
  • Abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was born into slavery sometime around 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland.
  • who is Frederick Douglasss
  • Frederick Douglass was born on a plantation where he knew little about himself. When Frederick Douglass was a young boy he had many questions, like who was his father, when is his birthday, and even why he got to see his mother so little. On one hot and dreadful day, working endlessly on his plantation a nice young white couple walked up to Frederick's master and asked to use him for a little, out of generosity he said yes thinking Frederick was going to be put to more tiring painful work. When Frederick arrived to his new temporary home he was terrified, he walked with his head down and never made eye contact with any of the Aulds. As he was standing on the front lawn mrs.Auld asked “why do you walk with your head down young lad ?” and all he did was keep his head down and then she said “speak when you are being spoken to here young las” and Frederick slowly lifted his head and said “ i was told to never look a white man in his eye it’s very disrespectful ma'am” and she looked at him with much sorrow in her face almost as if she felt sorry for the young lad “well here you walk with your head up and talk when you are spoke to do you hear me lad” said mrs.Auld. “ yes m’am” said Frederick and proceeded into his new temporary workplace.
  • The next day mrs. Auld took frederick into a room with an open book and asked “do you know how to read and he replied “no” and she sat with him for the next few days going word by word teaching him almost every letter until he understood the ABC’s.  The next day was a typical cold and stormy day and the little Auld was napping so mrs.Auld and frederick began to read again and Mr.Auld walked in on on them reading and pulled mrs.auld in to a seperate room and proceeded to talk to say ”you can not teach a slave to read you will make him unfit to be a slave” she looked concerned “but how” she pleaded “he will soon be educated enough to start asking questions and he will become unfit”. He kissed her on her forehead and walked out the room and she followed.
