China was weakened by internal problems. Europe and Japan kept claiming parts of China. This made China mad. Their anger lead to the Revolution.
Europe wants some of China...
Japan wants some of China...
A leader named Chiang had already set up a Nationalist government. Meanwhile, his opponent, Mao Zedong, gained support from the farmers who liked the idea of communism.
Mao Zedong: Communism!
The Nationalists moved to Taiwan and set up their government. The Communist stayed in China and introduced the Great Leap Forward. Taiwan wanted "One China" but the communists refused.
Chiang: One China?
Mao Zedong: Sike!
At first, the Nationalist government placed limits on the citizens. But, soon after, released some of the restrictions. They transformed the land into a free-enterprise country and became economically strong.
We love free-enterprise!
After Mao's death, the communist leaders relaxed a little on the restraints.
We'll let you have a little freedom if you behave...
Many of the Chinese people did not agree with the ways of communism. The wanted American-style free-enterprise. They tried to hold protests but the government crushed any attempts.
