  • just come into these dungeons
  • A  Gothic Protagonist The protagonist is isolated and alone.
  • Why am I so alone
  • Emotions Run High A heightened sense of drama including murders, kidnappings, and people going mad.
  • Where's the cask?
  • "Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the boxes, we percieved a still interior crypt or recess... for no especial use.."(Poe 5) This quote describes the dungeon that Monstressor owned, which was run-down and old.
  • Foreboding Ominous Implications precede dark events
  • Nobody can attack me with impunity!
  • "You are admired, you are happy, you are loved, just like how I once was" (Poe, 3) Monstressor is isolated because of Fortunado, and cut off from the world around him. He has no fame, respect or friends, only money. He goes to great lengths to get revenge for this.
  • Decay Formerly great family, community, country or individual who has peaked and now begins a slow process of decline
  • We were a great family.
  • "..producing from beneath the folds of my requelaire a trowel" (Poe, 5) Fortunado ignores all signs of doom, and goes to great lengths to get this wine. He defies common sense, ignoring the trowel and catacombs, which are used to kill him"
  • The Supernatural There may be ghosts or unexplained manifestations
  • That isn't the cry of a drunken man...
  • "nemone impune lacessit" (Poe, 5) Monstressor describing his coat of arms was very ominous, and implied a dark event happening because it means "no one attacks me without impunity", and Monstressor is getting his revenge.
  • "Monstressors were a great family" (Poe, 3) Monstressor's family has declined, or decayed, over the past several years.  This is due to many reasons, with one being Fortunado's bullying.
  • The Monstressors David Francis Linda
  • "... it wasn't the cry of a drunken man" (Poe, 5) People don't usually get sober in minutes, but Fortunado mysteriously wasn't drunk when he was tied up, which was abnormal.
