At the beginning of the story, the narrator is stating that he is not mad. Then exclaimed the reason for why he killed the old man.
The narrator stated that the old man's physical appearance made him feel uncomfortable and disgusted.
"My blood ran cold."
After, the narrator stated how he would sneak into the old man's room with a lantern.
The old man's body has been dismembered and hidden under the floorboard.
"I am not mad, would a mad person be able to do this and complete this action o so very cautiously."
Lastly, the police arrive to check up on the house due to receiving noise complaint. The narrator gladly welcomed the police into the house, showed them every room and made an excuse to why the old man was not there. In the old man's room, he lost his mind and confessed to killing the old man.
