For Fortunato, this is not good luck as he might assume. Montresor is plotting to kill Fortunato.
"But it is not getting late? Will not they be awaiting us at the palazzo, the lady Fortunato at the rest. Let us be gone."
Montresor explains to his servants that he would not be back home till the morning and told them to stay in his home till he came back. HE told them this because he knew they would not listen to him and his house would be empty when he returned with Fortunatos.
"He has a weak point-This Fortunato-although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself with connoisseur-ship in wine."
This story shows Dramatic Irony throughout the story. Fortunato is unaware from the very beginning that Montresor was going through an elaborate plan to lure Fortunato into the catacombs beneath the house to kill him.
"Come, we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter."
When Fortunato finds himself chained inside a narrow recess in the rock wall of the catacombs, he tries to plant seeds of doubt in Montrestos mind suggesting he was expected home.
The bait Montresor uses to entice Fortunato to his underground wine vaults and extensive caverns.
Montresor gives both the audience and fortanato hits of his real moves through the catacombs.
