Macbeth begins to fear Banquo has realized that since the prophecy of Macbeth becoming king came true, Banquo may try to make his prophecy come true. To vanquish his fear of Banquo's family taking over the throne, Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance.
Macbeth's murderers have waited for Bannquo and Fleance to arrive at the banquet and ambush them, successfully killing Banquo. Fleance flees at his father's urging, leaving a threat to Macbeth's throne.
At the banquet, Macbeth hallucinates and sees the Ghost of Banquo upon hearing of his death. He frequently talks to the Ghost, who doesn't respond, causing Lady <acbeth to create excuses for hi "visions".
Hecate, the goddess of witches, visits the "three weird sisters," to scold them for giving Macbeth his prophecy without her permission. They ignore Hecate and continue to share Macbeth's future with him, this time by showing him three apparitions.
Lennox discusses the recent murders in the kingdom with another lord. They announce Fleance has been charged with his father's murder because he fled. However, both lords suspect Macbeth was involved after due to the fact he wrongly took the throne from Malcolm.
