  • Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry? The longhorn were important because they help people travel because they were able to walk very long distances. The have very long horns which help protect them and their passengers. They were also important because people found very good use in their horns.
  • Describe what life was like in the oil fields. People who worked in the oil fields did not have a very pleasant job. On the job it was very rough, filthy, and hazardous. Shifts were usually about 12 hours long.  If gases leak from wells it could severely harm or kill you.
  • What are some advantages of railroads over other types of transportation in Texas? Instead of trying to ship goods by boat (which was risky because some rivers were shallow)you could ship goods by train. It is also much quicker than traveling by horse and cart because that could take 1 ½ to 2 days. They are a quicker, cheaper, and a faster way to travel.
