Xerxes came to a narrow mountain pass at Thermopylae ans was met by 7,000 Greeks along with 300 Spartans. Xerxes underestimated the greeks fighting ability . The Greeks held back the Persians for 3 days.
A traitor informed Xerxes of a secret path around the pass. Fearing the their defeat, the Spartans stayed and held back the Persians while the other Greeks retreated. The Spartans sacrificed themselves.
Meanwhile in Athens an Athens leader Themistocles convinced the city of Athens to evacuate and fight at sea . They positioned themselves in a narrow channel near the Island of Salamis. They Loured Persian ships in, trapping them in the channel which was to narrow for them to turn around. Smaller Greek ships attacked with battering rams a won the battle.
