The Indian Removal Act of 1830(An act where the government funds treaties to move Natives west)
Federal Government: provides money, rifles, and provision for a year to trade Indians land for new lands west of Mississippi
Native Tribes will pose a danger in the nation! We must remove them, even with force!
The Cherokee Refusal(They reject Jackson’s proposal... State of Georgia tried to remove them by force so the Cherokees took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court)
Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
We are an “independent” nation, protected by the treaty! Andrew Jackson, you can’t force us to move.
I will give you 2 years to relocate to Oklahoma
(Under this proposal the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles would trade their land)
Trail of Tears (1837)(The delay of moving caused the Cherokees to move on late fall and winter)
During this 800 mile journey, 1/4th out of the 16,000 Cherokees died from exposure to cold, etc. This is an unforgettable journey filled with tears and sadness
It’s... it’s so cold... all my friends and family are dying... I can’t do this anymore
