  • The Indian Removal Act of 1830(An act where the government funds treaties to move Natives west)
  • Federal Government: provides money, rifles, and provision for a year to trade Indians land for new lands west of Mississippi
  • Native Tribes will pose a danger in the nation! We must remove them, even with force!
  • The Cherokee Refusal(They reject Jackson’s proposal... State of Georgia tried to remove them by force so the Cherokees took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court)
  • Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
  • We are an “independent” nation, protected by the treaty! Andrew Jackson, you can’t force us to move.
  • I will give you 2 years to relocate to Oklahoma
  • (Under this proposal the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles would trade their land)
  • Trail of Tears (1837)(The delay of moving caused the Cherokees to move on late fall and winter)
  • During this 800 mile journey, 1/4th out of the 16,000 Cherokees died from exposure to cold, etc. This is an unforgettable journey filled with tears and sadness
  • It’s... it’s so cold... all my friends and family are dying... I can’t do this anymore
