This story takes place on Maple Street, U.S.A., 6:44 PM. Something that looks like a meteor hits the ground with a crash and a roar. Suddenly, all the electricity goes out, and everything stops working.
Why did you shoot him?
As confusion ensues, a young boy by the name of Tommy steps up. He believes that the meteor is from extraterrestrial beings, and he pleads with Steve to not go check the other street. At first, the adults do not believe Tommy, but fear makes them suspicious.
He's just a little boy!
Les Goodman's car starts working while he is not in it. His car is the only thing on the street that is on, and because of this, the residents of Maple Street suspect him to be an alien spy. Les Goodman is indignant and yells at the residents for being foolish and fearful.
They'll destroy each other.
Amidst the anger and confusion, a figure appears. As it approaches, a resident hands Steve a rifle. Steve questions why they would need it, but Charlie grabs it from his hands. He shoots as the figure nears, but the mysterious person is Pete Van Horn, who was coming to check on Maple Street. Pete Van Horn is now dead, and Charlie is attacked.
Maybe Charlie's the spy!
Why, it's Pete Van Horn!
Upon being blamed, Charlie points the crowd to Tommy, saying that he's the spy. The mob becomes angry and starts wildly accusing each other. The issue becomes violent, and everyone becomes a suspect.
It's Bob Weaver!
It's Les Goodman.
But he knew what was going to happen!
It's the kid, Tommy. He's the one!
As the crowd bickers and fights, destroying each other, it is revealed that aliens were, in fact, the cause of this mess. They expose their plan to destroy Earth: Make the residents destroy each other through fear and suspicion. They revel in their victory.
