Storyboard Text

  • I was 17 years old at the time when I got transferred all on my own to Covey’s plantation in Maryland. I did not know of my father, but I did know my mother. My mom died when I was young, but I remember how persevering she was. Almost every night, she would walk miles and miles from her plantation to mine, just to visit me.     Covey was the owner of the plantation I was moved to. He was known as the “Slave Breaker”. Covey was supposed to “break” me out of wanting to be free and wanting a better life. I did not believe that he could break me, though. His plantation was large and full of slaves. There were stables that smelled of horses and the other animals that he managed to cram in there.
  •     As I got older, Covey decided that because I was one of the stronger slaves, that he would work me harder and punish me if I didn’t. I have to gather crops, tend to the smelly animals in the barn, and pound the curry. If I slack even just for a few measly seconds, you can hear him coming behind me saying, “Oh Freddy? I see that you are slacking on your work! AGAIN!! I am here to make you NEVER want to do that again!” And then he would pull out his whip and slash all over my body. He would go on for minutes just whipping me and my fellow slaves.
  • One day I decide that I cannot stand another minute of this. I sneak off the plantation fields and run all the way to the woods. I have to figure out how long I can survive out there, as there were no food option because I did not bring anything with me to kill anything. I decided to only stay one night. I build myself a little hut out of branches and big plants. I was hoping that it wouldn’t rain that night, but of course, the odds were against me...     That night was even worse than I thought it would be. I heard wolves and bears running and howling throughout the night. There was no food, nor water. It was pouring rain and thunderstorms all night. When I woke up the next morning I went straight back to the plantation, but Covey knew I was gone. He started towards me, holding a rope, and tries to tie me up!
