Figuring out what he was up to, I jump to my feet and grab him his neck. I was squeezing his neck so tight, and for so long, he couldn’t move. You could tell by his facial expressions that he was surprised with my resistance. His trembling reassured me. He later calls out to Hughes, his associate, and he tries to take my hands off of Covey, and tie them up. This is my chance to get my payback on Covey for all the times he has whipped me. I can’t let Hughes get in my head… I gave Hughes a heavy kick under his ribs. He looked clearly hurt, so this left me in the hands of the one and only Covey. We go at this for another two hours. Covey tried to bring in more associates and I just did the same for them as I did for Hughes.
The morning after the fight, I woke up and my body was so sore, but something in my mind felt different. In my mind I knew I had done the right thing, fighting Covey. I had hurt him more than he had hurt me, but I was still hurting everywhere. Scratches and bruises everywhere. Blood dripping. When I stood up - about to leave my cabin to start working - I realized how much it hurt to walk on my left ankle. I fall to the ground and inspect it, realizing that it might be sprained. Though I was hurt physically, I felt better mentally. I stood up to Covey, something I have wanted to do for a long time! He now knows not to mess with me and that I am a very hard worker.
After doing as much work as I could that day, after my ankle being hurt, and doing a lot of thinking, I decide on something: I don’t deserve to be treated like this! I am a hard worker, I never complain, and I do whatever Covey tells me to. Today is the day I change that. I will not be whipped again. I was born a slave, but in my heart I know that one day, I will be free! *Several years later* I have been free for several years now. I now have a wife, two daughters, a dog, and a home. I was a slave for about four years after the fight with Master Covey. In those four years, I got in many more fights, with both slaveholders and slaves, but I was never whipped. I made a promise to myself in that week after the fight: I will never EVER get whipped again!
