  • How the Internet Works!
  • Sarah is on her computer in work. She is meant to be working but has become distracted by the news of a new singing dog video. Her computer has its own IP (Internet Protocol) address which she uses to talk to other IP addresses.
  • oooo I really want to watch a video of a singing dog on youtube
  • Typing in the website
  • Sarah types in the URL into the internet on her computer
  • URL means Uniform Resource locator(its basically the web adress you type to access a website)!
  • Who are you "with"?
  • URL sent request for
  • The ISP is who you are "with"such as Sky BT etc
  • They look inside their Domain Name Server which is a bit like the yellow pages to try and find the IP address for the place that Sarah would like to visit. If it is not there they move on to more DNSs until it is found
  • Finding the IP address
  • DNS

  • More DNSs this way!
  • Coming back to the computer
  • The IP address for the website is then sent back to Earth by the ISP to the very impatient Sarah who has been waiting for about 2 seconds
  • Mission Accomplished!
  • Finally, Sarah can watch that singing dog video! It really isn't just as simple as clicking a button
