My story of how a frog can come back to life after freezing.
It getting very chilly! Brrrr!
This is kind of scary now that think about it.
Hello, I am a wood frog from northern Alaska . Today I am going to be explaining how my species have evolved to be able to withstand the harsh winters. This allows my species to survive and reproduce for longer,
Wow I'm still alive thanks to this Antifreeze!
When winter starts to arrive the temperature starts to drop. I begin to prepare myself for the big freeze. My body reacts to the temperature(Stimulus) and starts to produce huge amounts of urine. I then store the urine in my blood.
All this sitting around sure has made me hungry!
As I begin to be covered in ice crystals I start my transformation. The water in my blood starts to freeze. The ice sucks the water out of my cells.
My livers start to produce large amounts of glucose to prevent dehydration(homeostasis). When the sugar mixes with the urine it makes homemade antifreeze. The mixture then pacts into my cells causing them to reform their shape.
As the weather begins to rise I start to Unthaw. While the ice melts the water returns to my cells. Whithen 30 minutes my heart starts to beat again and produce blood. Since I was frozen for so long I have to search for food to survive(metabolism).
After I survived another winter I continue to grow! All the other tree frogs are starting to find mates in order to reproduce. I am searching for one too! My energy has been restored due to the food I caught so I have to be on my way to find a mate. Bye!
