  • He was born Sept. 8 1157
  • The Great Revolt
  • Richard the Lion Heart was King of England and was known for his many battles as victories. He was mostly known for his battles in the 3rd Crusade against Saladin.
  • The 3rd Crusade
  • He was born in Oxford, England. His dad was King Henry the Second and his mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was the 3rd child to be born. He was raised in England and was taken into Normand by his mother. He commanded over his own army at the age of 16 and fought rebels in Poitou. His father decided to distribute the kingdom among his 3 elder sons. In 1170, his father gave the name of Titular King of England to Richard's older brother, Henry the Young King.
  • Getting Captured
  •   In 1173, Henry the Young King revolted against his father with assistance of his brothers and Louis VII. Richard and his brothers excluding Henry the Young King, were made vassals for Louis VII. They gathered barons and nobles in France and England as support against Henry II. Henry the Young King then put down the revolt and in 1183 he died, so Richard was now heir to the throne. He also revolted against his dad with assistance of Philip II, son of Louis VII. They defeated Richard's forces and then, Henry the 2nd died of a blood clot so Richard was then King of England.
  • Died April 6, 1199
  • Richard and Philip II then went on the 3rd crusade against Saladin and his Muslim army. Richard started his military campaigns in Sicily and Cyprus. Richard the Lion Heart and Philip II won a series of battles against Saladin and his forces but so did Saladin. So many battles the 2 sides have won that it had to end as a tie, which means Richard couldn't take Jerusalem from Saladin. He and Philip then decided to head on back leaving a truce of 3 years with Saladin.
  • On his way back to England, he was captured by Leopold V, the duke of Austria near Vienna in 1192. In 1193 he was handed over to the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry VI who then released Richard Lion Heart in 1194 with a hefty ransom. While he was away, his little brother John revolted and illegally took power with the assistance of Philip II.
  • Richard the Lion Heart died on April 6th, 1199. He was killed by a crossbowman of Richard's own army for killing his family. Richars's wound turned really severe and died from the pain. His last words were about forgiving the crossbow man as a last act of mercy and freed the crossbowman.
