The French, English, and Native Americans were fighting over the Ohio River Valley. The French wanted the land to trade and get fur. The English wanted more land. Native Americans thought of this land as home and just wanted the French and English to leave them alone.
The Half-King killed Jumonville who was a French diplomat or a peacekeeper. But, George Washington was blamed for this crime because he wasn't able to control the Half-King. This made the French very angry with Washington.
Inexperience of George Washington
George Washington built a fort in the woods called Fort Necessity. This fort was surrounded by forest. A huge pack of the French was led by Jumonville's Brother and they were coming to attack the fort. Washington was trapped in the forest.
The French offered Washington a chance to surrender at his fort. The surrender documents were in another language. Unfortunately, Washington's top translator was wounded, so he had to send a Dutchman that couldn't speak French very well. Since he couldn't understand the document, Washington signed it without knowing it said that he confessed to killing Jumonville!!!
George Washington made a lot of mistakes. He built a fort that was surrounded by woods, he was taken advantage of by the half-king, signed a surrender when he didn't know what it said, and he sent an inexperienced translator to translate a very important message.
King George II had to fix George Washington's mess. Also, the English general was rude to the Native Americans when they tried to help England during the war. So, they ended up teaming up with the French. This was the start of the French and Indian war which lasted for 7 years.
