We, the Sumers, moved from the Zagros foothills to the plains for more land. The water supply was unpredictable, so the Sumers had to build levees along the rivers to prevent flooding. They also built canals and dams to control water flow.
The plow helped us till our new land much faster so we could produce more crops.
Social Structure and Government
I am a Scribe and I write down laws for people to follow.
The royal family! That reminds me of social levels. The top level are kings, priests, and government officials. The middle level are Merchants and Artists. The bottom level are slaves. The people that ruled were the kings.
We, the Sumerians, made statues and places to worship the gods. Many of us actually thought the gods lived there.
My name is engraved on the glazed brick on our ziggurat.
I play the lyre. I decorated it with shiny stones. I like to play love songs.
I am a metalworker. I like to design mirrors and jewelry.
We invented the wheel from rolling a potter's sheet forward. The cart that I am on is very advanced because it can carry heavier loads. The earlier sledges were just flat bottom carts to make it easier to move goods over long distances.
I can't draw symbols! Help! Pictographs are really hard. I prefer to communicate in cuneiform. I would record the goods my family would share with one another.
