Laurent Clerc was born in 1785. When they were young, they fell into a fireplace, which is believed to be the way he lost his hearing. His God-uncle enrolled him in the Institut National des Jeune Sourds-Muets, the first public school for the deaf in the world

Later on, in 1816, the director of Institut National des Jeune Sourds-Muets, Abbe Roch-Ambroise Sicardwent to London and took Laurent with them. Thomas Gallaudet from Hartford, Connecticut was at a lecture on July 10

Gallaudet was neighbors with Mason Fitch Cogswell, the father of Alice Cogswell who was deaf. There were no schools for the deaf in The United States So Gallaudet went to Europe for help
Founding the School

Europe to get help from Braidwood Academy, but because of their dependence on the monopoly they had created, they refused. Gallaudet was then later introduced to Laurent by Sicard
in 1816 Gallaudet invited Laurent Clerc to America to build a school for the deaf. Laurent Clerc and Thomas Gallaudet went on a 52 day Voyage to America on ship Mary Augusta. During the voyage, Laurent gave Gallaudet lessons on how to sign and Gallaudet gave Laurent English lessons in return
