I feel horrible about my dad's thumb, and if he can't sign on we will have no money . I must sign on myself, unfortunately I will be leaving my friends and family.
I met a boy named Emile that used to go to school with me. My arms are aching, and I miss my family a little.
Everybody was so far ahead of me when we were carrying our packs, and when I finally got to the stopping point I found out that I had one that was filled with lead shots so it was the weight of two packs! Apparently La Petite, and La Londe made a bet that I would succeed in carrying my pack, and I did so everybody payed them.
The first day on Lake Superior was fine, but the second day was horrible! There were huge white caps rolling in from the west! Eventually there was so much water that I had to start bailing the water with the kettle. We started to head to the shore like the other canoes already had. La Petite sent out a few men to come help us. When we finally got to shore they started teasing us.
We finally made it to Grand Portage, and it's such a relief to not have to paddle for a few days. I met Charbonneau's friend Mukwa, he was dressed sort of funny. We got invited to eat dinner with them sometime.
I am choosing to go home but I'm going to sign on again next spring. Emile is wintering so he won't be coming home with us. I'm going to miss Grand Portage but I'm excited to go home. The reason I am going to sign on again is because as tough as it was, it was also fun, and rewarding.
