After he wakes up from his night on the island, Rainsford sets off to look for signs of people. He finds many things that shows humans are there, like boot prints. (Page 95)
Zaroff Hunts Humans
Hunting animals began to bore me, so I decided to hunt humans instead.
Once Rainsford finds the mansion he sets off and knocks on the door. An angry man named Ivan opens the door ad pulls a gun on him. Rainsford tries to explain himself, which doesn't work thankfully Zaroff comes and saves him from Ivan, introducing himself to Rainsford. (Pages 96 + 97)

Rainsford and Zaroff head to the dining room, where Zaroff tells his life story. He explains how he's been hunting since he was five, how he has the "biggest game" on his island, how he was in the army, and how the "debacle in Russia..."changed his life. (Pages 107 - 109)

The Next Day
Zaroff and Rainsford are still in the dinging room. Zaroff explains how hunting began to bore, so he came up with a new solution, huting humans. Rainsford is extremely disgusted. The next morning Rainsford wishes to leave and Zaroff says if he does the hunt with him and win, he can leave.
Tell you what, if you can beat me at my game, I'll let you leave

Rainsford heads into the jungle and the first he does is make a fox trail, which Zaroff manages to find. He then tries a dead fall trap, but he only manages to injure Zaroff.

Rainsford's second to last attempt is a Burmese tiger pit which kills Zaroff's best dog. In his final attempt to stop Zaroff, he takes his knife and uses a trick he learned in Uganda. When he only manages to Ivan, he reakizes the only thing he can do now is run.
