  • Native Americans sided with the British and were attacking American settlers.
  • We need control of the west. It's critical to the safety of my people.
  • Washington sent troops to Ohio Valley. Little Turtle's warriors defeated Washington's army in 1790.
  • Washington sent the troops to Ohio Valley again in 1791. The Little Turtle warriors defeated Washington's army for a second time.
  • While this happened, other chiefs ignored Little Turtle’s advice to negotiate with America and replaced him with a new leader.
  • Washington ordered Anthony Wayne to lead the army in the next battle.
  • In 1794, the Native Americans asked the British for help to defeat the Americans but the British refused. The Native Americans knew they would have to surrender. Twelve tribes then signed the Treaty of Greenville giving part of Ohio and Indiana to Americans.
