  • 7-3.3 Latin American Independence  Movements
  • These are Peninsulares. They are at the top of the Social Hierarchy in colonial Latin America. They were born in Spain and are in the process of moving a Spanish colony. They are able to hold the highest political offices.
  • This is a Creole. A Creole is someone born in Latin America with two Spanish parents. They were not allowed to hold political office, but were allowed to be army officers. The South American Revolution was led by Creoles. The Creole leader of this revolution was Simon Bolivar. Jose de San Martin also contributed to this revolution
  • This baby is a Mestizo. Mestizo's have one Spanish parent and one native parent. Mestizos led the Mexican Revolution. The Mestizo leader of this revolution was Father Miguel Hidalgo.
  • This baby is a Mulatto. A Mulatto is someone with one Spanish parent and one African slave parent.
  • These are African slaves. Slaves and Natives were at the bottom of the Social Hierarchy in Latin America. At first, natives were used as slaves. However, since natives developed diseases easily and knew the land better than the colonists, they were replaced with Africans. The Haitian Revolution was led by slaves. The former slave leader of this revolution was Toussaint L'Ouverature.
